Steve Anderson

Steve died in a trucking accident in January 1989 at 35 years of age.

Our classmate, Tom Pickett, shares these memories of Steve:
After high school Steve worked for the County of Boulder in the streets and maintenance department. He had one son, born of his marriage to our classmate, Mimi Howard. They later divorced and he remarried. He eventually attained his commercial driver’s license and began driving semi tractor trailers over the road for a large trucking company. He so impressed his employers and they offered to sell him 5 semis to start his own business. Acting on that opportunity, Steve started his own trucking company, S&S Trucking, which specialized in the transportation of delicate electronic equipment and other fragile cargo. His company was so successful that Steve was eventually able to work from his home, brokering loads and contracting drivers. He drove less frequently, and this arrangement left him some time for fishing. .

Steve lived in Boulder. He was proud of his old Scout 4x4, and his pickup truck. Having overcome difficulties with alcohol, he led a very productive life and was devoted to his sobriety, a significant accomplishment in his life. He was good friends with Scott Panetta and Tom Pickett. Steve encouraged Tom to attain a commercial driver’s license and encouraged him to pursue his own trucking career, for which encouragement Tom is grateful. .

In January 1989 Steve and Tom set out on a trip to Montana when a scheduled driver was unable to make the trip. They were traveling from Billings to Bozeman when Steve hit a patch of ice on an otherwise clear highway. The truck jack-knifed and Steve was thrown from the truck, which resulted in his death the next day. Tom recalls Steve with great admiration and states “I’d like to champion Steve on his sobriety and stamina.”
